She was buried yesterday in the countryside at a really beautiful and peaceful location., close to her original companion, Nellie. Thanks for everyone?s advice ? it was much appreciated. I may put an additional post on later if I find out anything that might be useful to others. Numb and on automatic at the moment..... Regards, Suzanne --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Would appreciate any feedback on those who have decided not to do surgery on a stone pig.? Lucky has had two stone surgeries in his short life (3 1/2 years). He had one surgery?about a year and a half ago and then another one in mid-December of 2006. After being given "a clean bill of health", I began to notice disturbing symptoms again, approximately 8 weeks after his surgery. The vet thought I was nuts when I asked him to take an x-ray (I would have been happy to have been certified neurotic), ?but sure enough he had another?big stone! I have decided that putting him through a third surgery so soon was not fair to him , particularly since it would?likely?result in?the same scenario.? So the timeline is as follows, the x-ray confirming the new stone was done in early February. Initially, while he was passing what seemed like a lot of blood in his urine he wasn't in a lot of pain so I held off giving him the Metacam that I got from the vet. I also started him on two Shilington (spelling?)?tabs a day -- one in the evening and one in the morning. For a couple of weeks in February he seemed "out of it" -- withdrawn and?not his usual chipper self, but in the last couple of weeks he has perked up even though he is clearly in pain while peeing and pooping. I have started the Metacam (every 12 hours at the prescribed amount) . The blood in his urine is decidedly less and he is frisky and eating pretty well, though has lost some weight.?My thinking is that as long as he is responsive and still shows an interest in his food that I'm not being a bad slave by keeping him on this side of the bridge. I know he hurts every time he goes to the bathroom but otherwise he is doing OK. Any other thoughts or ideas??Merle, slave to Lucky??????????? Also check on the vegetables you are giving him. Dandilion, parsely, dill and other greens can be very high and contribute to stones. I was also told 50 mg of vitamin C are good for keeping away stones. My vet prescribed a drug they use on cats to dissolve stones. It worked on one of my guinea pigs although is hard on the tummy but was better tolerated when given yoghurt before and after. I can't remember the name at the moment. I have always given my pigs tap water filtered through a Brita pitcher. The Brita does not remove flouride and it never occurred to me that might be a problem. My Skippy progressed from needing a bladder flush for sludge to forming enormous stones one right after the other. I tried many things (dietary restrictions, various medications) but the one thing that seems to have really helped has been switching to bottled water. I use Penta water, which is insanely expensive; it's possible that any flouride-free bottled water would do the trick, but I am not about to rock the boat. Since changing his water, his bladder has remained clear (last stone surgery over 7 months ago). In short: DO NOT GIVE YOUR PIGGIES FLUORIDATED WATER! Amy

Message-ID: <673652.53795.qm@web53115.mail.yahoo.com> Brownie Bear: Born in late Oct/early Nov 2001 Passed on February 27, 2007 Hello Slaves, It has taken me a long time to write this because it hurts so much to think about Life without my Brownie Bear. But, Time is definitely helping in the healing process. And the tears are becoming few and few. So, here goes: Wow, where do I begin??? My Brownie Bear was a Christmas gift from my Hubby, Blaine. She was a pet store pig and she was so cute and little when I brought her home. She was very shy and quite standoff-ish in the beginning and her personality confused me. She was a Biter, and I had never delt with a biting pig, so it hurt my feelings quite a bit in the beginning. Later, I understood why that I had to deal with her in a different way and recognize when she wanted to take a finger off (or two). She had fierce, sharp teefies and that is why she was the purrrrfect candidate for many of the virtual events as 'Head of Security'. Brownie Bear was a Sassy pig. She was quite the little Diva and she demanded nothing but Respect. She was Bossy and she wanted things Her Way...or else. She was the Queen of the house, and if we didn't like it, then whee could just leave. Our home was often referred to as 'La Casa de Brownie Bear' and there was a reason for that. Yep. She wasn't much of a Cuddler until she got older and even then, she didn't want to cuddle unless she was in the mood. Otherwise, she would complain until you put her down. BB was a stone piggie. She survived bladder stone surgery when she was 2 years old and another stone-removal (through her urethra) when she was 4 years old. She had two Awesome Vets that has taken the Best of care of her and I am just Happy that they did all that they did for her. Her Vet in Virginia was Dr. Valerie Campbell and her Vet in North Carolina was Dr. Chris Griffin. Brownie Bear was a very intelligent guinea pig. She would give you kisses on the lips for veggie treats and for Metacam (honey-favored pain medicine). She often played tricks on her little brother, Butterscotch, especially when he had something that she wanted. She had a HUGE wheeker and would Wheek Really LOUD if she heard the fridge door open or plastic bags rattling. And if you didn't get what she wanted fast enough, she would stand in the opening of their cage and give you the most Evil of Looks. She has a book called 'The Adventures of Brownie Bear & Butterscotch' and she won 2nd Place in the 2007 CRITTERS USA magazine for the 'On The Go' category. Yes, she has made her Mommy & Daddy Slaves very Proud. BB was a Huge FLIRT! She Loved to tease the piggie boys and flaunt her stuff. She had major crushes on several pigs, especially Sammy. Sammy was Mary's pig (BB's Favorite piggie-sitter in Virginia). BB would follow Sammy around where ever he went. He made her feel so safe. He is over the Bridge too, and I'm sure she has met up with him. Of course, the Love of her life was Brownie 'Pumpkin Pig' and even though they never met in person, they were always connected in more ways than one. She went through 5 moves with us and lived in 6 different places. She was quite the traveller, I must say. We very very Happy that she lived to see our (her) first house (that we owned). She was a free-range piggie, and even though she could go where ever she wanted, she choose to stay close to the food and water. She was a home-body, or rather a cage-body. She didn't like to wander too far from their cage. Brownie Bear, I hope I did you justice, Baby. I Love You and Miss You and I promise to hold you and Love all over you and kiss you again when the time is Right. We'll be together again one day, I promise. Say "Hello" to your boyfriend, Brownie 'Pumpkin Pig' and to Sammy and to all of your 'ole Friends and new ones too, and also to Peter Gurney. Rest in Peace, my Sassy Bear... ____________________________________________________________________________________ 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? Find a flick in no time with the Yahoo!
