At first, we thought it was a UTI. After 3 days on antibiotics, she seemed to be improving and the blood in her wee seemed to be subsiding. Then, it seemed to get alot worse all of a sudden. She started crying when she urinated and poo'd. Took her back to the vet for xray which confirmed one stone. The vet also did a urinalysis and discovered that her wee was very alkaline. He is fairly confident that we could dissolve the stone enough so she could pass it by administering 1 -1.5 ml unsweetened cranberry juice 3 x per day. We've been doing this for the past 3 weeks, as well as continuing on antibiotics. She is still eating, drinking, and acting somewhat like her normal self (when she isn't wee'ing). Most days, her wee has only a small amount of red. However, every 3 days or so, she has very red wee and very leaky rear. It also appears that she is passing some sludge when she has the very red wee. It isn't too much - just looks like a bit of grit. I just just ordered her some of the chinese herb shiltiling (sp?) to hopefully help her pain and ease the passing of the stone. Does anyone out there see any hope in all of this? Anyone have a similar situation where the stone dissolved and passed. It is KILLING me (and her cage mates) to see her in pain like this. I would like to try herbal remedies and avoid surgery if at all possible. She is getting older and I think surgery would be too much for her to handle. But that was enough for me to recognize the likely symptoms when our young Champ started whimpering when he'd need to pee. An xray revealed a single stone about 1 cm. Not wanting to put him through surgery, especially with the likelihood another one would follow, we tried a round of Baytril. After being on that for close to six weeks, another xray showed that the stone now is much smoother, but no smaller. We have discontinued the Baytril for now, and have been advised that use of Shilintong wouldn't be likely to help in his case, being a male. I have tried the barley water in the past, and given him a bit of cranberry juice (well, cranapple). What is really likely to help a boy like him? His symptoms are much better now, but the xray shows the stone is still present. Would a more rigid routine of the cranberry juice and maybe barley water help? Should we try the Shilintong? Would Leah's famous 'Power Hour' help him any? (giving him lots of extra water) He is already resisting syringe feedings. Is it possible to tell what kind of stone it is from a urine sample? Someone had suggested that sometimes a stone can be dissolved with a medication given to cats for stones, but our vet said that cats have different kinds of stones. -zatso? Message-ID: <758160.81503.qm@web56508.mail.re3.yahoo.com> The saga continues... I think my little sweet Maya may have passed something last night. She was really straining all evening and not feeling well at all - could tell she was in pain. This morning, when I got her out to give her meds, there was an off-white clump of stuff in her house. It was shaped and about the size of a poop. However, it was crystally looking but not shiny crystal. It sort of looked like rock candy, but a little more smooth and rounded and not shiny. It was very light in weight and seemed like it was very porous. It was fairly hard, but not super rock hard. It rolled right off my hand and I couldn't find it in the bedding and I was rushing to go to work. Does that sound like a bladder stone??? There was also a bunch of red on the towel in her house. Could be from the cranberry juice, but I think there was probably some blood. Going to the vet on Friday for another xray to see what, if anything, has happened since her last xray a month ago. Maya has went from being a stone pig to a sludge pig. Her bladder is still irritated, but "feels much better than 2 weeks ago". He looked at her urine under the microscope and saw alot of very very tiny crystals which look like little dog bones. The vet thinks our strategy of unsweetened cranberry juice 3 x per day, shilintong 2 x per day, and antibiotics 1 x per day seems to be working. He is optimistic that continuing this regimin will clean out her system, allow her bladder walls to heal. We just can't let the crystals precipitate into stones again. Thank god she is a pig with a GI track that handles anitbiotics so well because we are going on 6 weeks now. Over the past few days, her appetite has improved and she is drinking alot more water. Her coat is back to being shiny and smooth as well. I am praying that this strategy works. She is such a sweet little pig and has been such a trooper through all of this. Putting up with mommy and daddy and the many syringe feedings has to be stressful. As of an ultrasound and x-ray today, a second one of my piggies, Doris, appears to have a stone or stones as well. She has not been indicating any pain while urinating but I noticed this morning that some of her urine was pink and took her in to the vet. The vet, who is NOT very experienced with guinea pigs, showed me the x-ray which does show some shadowy forms in Doris' bladder which she (the vet) thinks are stones. (I expected they would show up whiter on the x-ray, similar to bones, but these are not nearly that dense-looking.) The vet is sending the x-ray to the veterinary college 200 miles north of here to have a more experienced exotics vet look at it and see if they agree. In the meantime, Doris is on antibiotics and metacam (she was treated for a bladder infection about three months ago and has seemed fine since then, but I am now wondering if the stones were already there then --- only an ultrasound was done that time and the vet thought it showed only a bit of sludge in the bladder). Now I really need to get the benefit of your collective experience. Of those of you who have had stone surgery done on your piggies, how many had a recurrence of the stones and how soon after the original surgery did that happen? I also lost a guinea pig to a uterine tumor this spring, far advanced by the time it was discovered, but to avoid that with Doris and her pal Audrey, I was already planning to take them to the aforementioned veterinary college to have them both spayed sometime this summer (there are no local vets who do guinea pig surgery), and *could* have the stone surgery done on Doris up there as well. I've just read so many accounts from people who had that done and then the stone was back in a month or so, though, that I would like to get a sense of how much time I would likely be buying for her by doing that (I know there are no guarantees either way, of course). I'd also like to hear about people's success, or lack of it, with shillintong or polycitra. After I posted messages about Guinevere a few months back, a very kind list member sent me a supply of shillintong which I didn't have a chance to try on Guinnie; I know that some piggies either stop eating with that, or it doesn't appear to help them at all, so I'd like to get a sense of the general experience with it if I can. (I have less information about polycitra but have heard some indications that it has worked to prevent stone formation or reduce existing stones in some piggies.) Thanks for reading this far and I would really appreciate any information you can give me about your own experiences treating and managing stones... Pat S. I mix it with about 75% cranberry and 25% bottled water. I also wanted to post about some issues we had with her on Wed - Thurs, which kind scared me at first. I don't think she was drinking enough water on Wed night and started peeing / dripping bright red. Her rear end was very very wet and red. I panicked because I thought it was blood, but it turned out to be cranberry (it dried bright red, not brown). I held off on the cranberry for about 18 hours because I don't want to overload her system. However, in retrospect, she seemed to feel alot better and it didn't seem to bug her, other than having a wet rear and me cleaning her up. I'm wondering if having her bladder bathed in cranberry may have helped. However, I am now giving her additional bottled water with the cranberry. On the water, I read somewhere that Penta brand water is great, but pricey. On a separate note, Maya is continuing to pass sludge. She still looks and acts better than she did before she passed her stone. She also has urine scald or cystisis (spelling?) and has sores "down there". I've been cleaning her with diluted hibiclens and using a tiny bit of balmex. I just bought some echinecea which was recommended by Peter Gurney, so I will try that. I also bought some chanca piedra which is a spanish herb that means "break stone". I ready a few postings that this may help. This stuff is also in the cranberry critter berries by oxbow hay company.
