Pat,

I know that Tex is the best guy around to answer your question but I do have
some personal knowledge.

I had a precious pig, Mr. Squeeker that was diagnosed with stones. I wasn't
a very experienced pig owner at the time--I only knew I loved my pig. I
took him to a vet that I could see after 5:00 since I worked. They
recommended the surgery to remove the stone. I thought long and hard as the
cost was to be about $400. My daughter and I decided to pool our funds and
do it. He was a very special pig and he was young. He had the surgery and
stayed puffed up until 48 hours and two trips back to the vet, he had passed
away. The moral of my story is, I would want an experienced vet. This vet
said she had performed this surgery successfully one time and told us it
would be fine I feel like she really wanted the experience more than she
cared about my pig or my wallet. I know this sounds rather harsh but if you
have limited funds, an unexperienced exotic vet can cost you the pain of
losing your pig and causing financial hardship. If surgery by a good exotic
vet is not affordable or accessible, the next time for me, I will be putting
my animal to sleep with no more unnecessary pain for them.

I certainly don't mean to offend anyone by my choices or opinion. We all
have to do what we feel is right for our animals and budgets. I have a
female pig, Peaches that I took to the vet this week and she has a
tumor/mass. I also have a new vet and he is an exotic vet. He told me she
isn't in any pain and she is old--to take her home and love her, give her
anything she wants to eat but when she stops eating to bring her back and we
would lovingly send her over to the Rainbow Bridge in peace.

Again, Tex is wonderful and knows so much. Not only does he know, but he is
a great comfort when your pig is ill.

I get mine to drink more water when I flavor their water with a little
cranberry juice. You might try that. I try very hard to get mine to drink
as much water as possible. I also don't give them tap water. Darn pigs get
bottled water. I have often wondered about the water/chemicals with the
stone formation. I think others on this list have thought the same thing.

I will keep your Guinevere in our piggie prayers. Good luck to you.
Lee Ann in Okc
