Hi,

Well, the "good" news is that it was an oxalate stones, so it should respond better to diet modification. That doesn't mean stones can't return, though. If the blood persists, it may mean a follow-up x-ray is needed just to rule out another stone.

What's his current diet? Does he drink much water, get exercise?

A post-op UTI is not uncommon - but you need to determine what's causing it. He may just have some crystals (sludge) that are causing irritation. Diabetes can also cause recurring UTI (you can do a urine glucose test at home, or get a blood glucose done at the vet if you suspect diabetes). There are other things that can cause a UTI as well; best to start by concentrating on Lucky's diet, try and get more water in him, some exercise, and go from there.

Tex

Subject: [Stones] Blood after stone removal

> Hi: Lucky had stone surgery 4 weeks ago (this coming Thursday). It was done by an experienced vet who also cares for the piggies of a rescue in my area (my regular vet didn't have the experience to do the surgery). Lucky came through the surgery well and appears so much better -- not in obvious pain anymore, eating well and running around. However, he still has blood in his urine-- though not constantly. I have talked to the vet who seems to think this isn't too abnormal and has now put him on his third round of Baytril (another 7 days). I'm a little worried -- I was hoping by now that I would be worrying more about managing his diet than blood. (It was an oxalate stone, by the way). Any advice or thoughts? -- mostly on whether still having blood in his urine is within normal range after surgery and for managing his diet ongoing. (He used to love dandelion greens and I have cut those out completely, much to his dismay).
